Blister Packs

At Coens Pharmacy we are happy to organise your tablet medication into individual blister packs, with the correct time, date and the dosage required marked clearly on the outside.  This is all part of our customer service designed to ensure that you, or those you care for, take the right medicine at the right time.  The blister pack also allows both patient and their carer givers to see clearly whether pills have been taken.  We feel that this is an important service for us to offer to our valued customers, particularly if there is any visual or cognitive impairment or when the prescription calls for a variety of medication.

Blood Glucose/ Sugar Testing

At Coen's Pharmacy our expert and friendly staff can do a blood sugar level test at the store. Blood sugar screening is a simple procedure that allows you to assess the amount of sugar or glucose in your blood.  Glucose is our body’s main energy source.  The hormone insulin moves glucose from our bloodstream into our cells.   A higher or lower level of sugar in the blood can be a precursor to diabetes and an indication that lifestyle, diet, or exercise to regain a balance.  For those with diabetes, a blood sugar test is a vital tool in managing the disease.  Simply pre-book your appointment, remembering to fast for 24 hours prior to the check.  The test itself is non-invasive and involves taking a small drop of blood from the tip of the finger.  Results are instant and our pharmacist will advise on the next steps, depending on the test results.

BMI Check

Body Mass Index or BMI is a measure of the amount of weight you carry in relation to your height. A high BMI indicates a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes, especially if there are other health factors to consider.  At Coen’s Pharmacy, our pharmacists can check your BMI and offer advice on staying within the healthy range. Simply book a private discreet appointment.

Medicines Use Review

A Medicines Use Review, or an MUR, is an important part of Coen’s community pharmacy service. Our pharmacists will conduct a complete review of a patient’s prescription, giving advice on which over-the-counter products can be used or avoided alongside existing medication. They impart specialist knowledge and advice on the prescription overall. The review will give clarity and information on your prescription and may make your medication regime more cost-effective as well as clinically effective.

If further medical attention is warranted or indicated by the test results, we follow the Irish Heart Foundation guidelines in referring you appropriately to your doctor or medical professionals. It is recommended that you fast for twelve hours before the test to get accurate blood glucose and cholesterol reading.  Book a cardiovascular health check today.

Cholesterol Testing

High cholesterol can be a serious condition as it increases the risk of serious health conditions such as heart disease and stroke. It is possible to have high cholesterol and show no symptoms. Family history, age, gender, weight, and lifestyle all contribute to causing high cholesterol levels. Have your cholesterol tested right here at Coen’s pharmacy by our trained staff.   A simple test measures the total amount of cholesterol in your body and calculates both the good cholesterol (HDL, high-density lipoprotein) and the bad cholesterol (LDL< low density lipoprotein) and the Triglycerides, which are a type of fat found in the blood. Our trained staff will review the results with you and offer advice on any further course of action that might be needed.

Diabetes Screening

At Coen’s Pharmacy, we offer Diabetes screening to assess some of the main risk factors for developing diabetes.  Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high. There are 2 main types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes – where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin and type 2- the more common form of insulin where the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body's cells do not react to insulin. It's very important for diabetes to be diagnosed as early as possible because it will get progressively worse if left untreated.  The diabetes screening consultation we offer takes place in our private consultation room and involves several screenings.  The pharmacist will check the amount of sugar in your blood, the blood glucose levels, your blood pressure, BMI, and waist size and discuss your lifestyle and any possible symptoms or indicators of prediabetes or diabetes.    The results are immediate, and our friendly trained staff will offer advice if any action is needed as a result of the screening.

Coen’s pharmacy stocks a wide range of nutritional supplements which can be taken when you feel that you need a little extra energy boost, or when you are lacking a specific vitamin that you cannot get through your diet. Have temporary minor health issues, need to boost immunity, or feel unusually tired?  We can advise which products would be most effective and advise on contraindications with long-term medication or pre-existing health issues.  A healthy diet and a balanced lifestyle are usually enough to give our bodies and minds all they need to function well, but when you need that extra help, a vitamin or mineral supplement can be hugely helpful in bringing your back to your top form.
